This introductory lecture will provide an overview of RNA-Seq technology, its various application and shortcomings, as well as detailing the steps involved in analyzing the resulting data. The specific topics covered include:

7. Identifying differentially expressed genes
8. Discussion of relevant file formats and data conversion tools

Followed by: A Practical Guide to Interpreting RNA-Seq Data Next-generation sequencing (NGS) RNA-seq experiments generate millions of reads per run and problems can arise. Before analyzing the data to draw biological conclusions, it is important to perform quality control checks to minimize the effects of sequencing error, biases in the data, or contamination.  In this talk, we discuss the theory and practice of assessing the quality of RNA-Seq data, as well as analysis strategies for mitigating technical noise using practical examples.
