About this Course

In this 2-day workshop, you will learn about various ways to study the microbiome including important concepts and best practices in microbial community analysis. You will also gain hands-on experience setting up and running a shotgun metagenomics pipeline using Nephele, NIAID’s free application for microbiome analysis, and will explore key outputs for downstream analysis.

Day 1: The Basics of Microbiome Analysis
• Learn about various omics approaches to studying the microbiome and key concepts.
• Understand best practices, available resources, and bioinformatic considerations for microbial community analysis.

Day 2: Shotgun Metagenomics with Nephele
• Gain hands-on experience running a shotgun metagenomics pipeline using Nephele.

Prerequisites: This workshop is intended for a beginner audience. No prior knowledge is required. Attendees will need to register for a Nephele account at https://nephele.niaid.nih.gov.

Accessibility Statement: This training will be held virtually. Closed captioning will be available. Individuals who are needing ASL interpretation and/or other reasonable accommodations should contact Dr. Deborah Croteau, croteau@nih.gov. Requests should be made at least five days in advance.
